What do we treat?
The many benefits of sports massage

Did you know sports massage is not only for professional athletes or ambitious amateurs? Sports massage treatment is also used for many office work-related ailments; besides, we can help you with posture correction and full body assessment. The following injuries and ailments are commonly treated in our practice:

Sports Injuries

What are the most common sports injuries?

ITB syndrome (Runner knee pain):

Running and cycling injuries are mostly due to the high repetition frequency and long duration of lower limb movement patterns. This leads to tension in the fascia latae (TFL), gluteus, and lateral muscles that connect the ITB, pinching the ITB and rubbing against the lateral femoral condyle, resulting in pain.

Golf elbow:

It often happens to beginner golfers when the club hits the floor first, the impact force is reflected from the ground to the elbow and causes the inner side of the ulna of the arm, which occurs repeatedly, causes inflammation and pain: it also often occurs in users with excessive wrist flexors.

Tennis elbow:

Tennis elbow tends to occur when the elbow is extended quickly and loaded with weight. It may also occur due to wrist extensors' overuse and tendons' overloading.

Sprain:

Your ligaments connect one bone to another. A sprain occurs when a ligament is stretched beyond its limits. Once a sprain occurs and a ligament is stretched, it is more likely that it can occur again.

Strain or pulled muscle:

Your tendons connect your muscles to your bones. A strain, or pulled muscle, occurs when a tendon or muscle tissue is stretched beyond its limits. Much like a sprain, once the tissue is stretched, it is more likely that it will be strained once again.

Knee injuries:

Your knee is the most complex joint in your body. Because of this, it is also one of the most commonly injured body parts. Knee injuries can include repetitive-use injuries that make it difficult to move the knee, dull aches that run from your hip to your knee, or more severe injuries such as an ACL tear that require intensive rehabilitation and have a higher probability of needing surgical correction.

How are sports injuries treated?

Your treatment plan will typically include sports massage therapy, stretching, and strengthening exercises. Sports massage therapy is used to increase your range of motion and reduce scar tissue, stretching is used to improve balance and mobility, and strengthening exercises are used to support the injured and surrounding areas. These are all done in order to help you recover after your sports injury and to prevent further injury from occurring.

A physical therapy program may include stretches to improve flexibility, as well as light exercises to strengthen the muscles in your hand and wrist.

Hip and Knee Pain Relief

Why does hip and knee pain develop?

Your hip and knees contain similar structures; therefore, they can be subject to similar stresses. Many times, the hip and knees suffer the same diseases, disorders, and injuries. For example, overuse injuries, such as tendonitis, and chronic muscle strain, are common in both the hip and knees due to the constant use that those joints experience. The hip and knee are both vulnerable to acute injuries, such as strains, sprains, and dislocation

While some conditions may affect both the hip and knees, some may be specific to one joint or the other. However, painful injuries that cause instability in the hips can also affect the knees. For example, tight hip flexor muscles and weak gluteus medius muscles can cause the hip to rotate inward without you realizing it. This can result in painful conditions, such as iliotibial band friction syndrome or patellofemoral stress syndrome, as unusual stress is being put on the knee or kneecap by the hip.

Headache Relief

Headache relief

If you suffer from headaches, you are not alone. Approximately 80-90% of people endure occasional or frequent tension headaches. They are also the third most commonly reported source of pain across the world! Whether they are acute and temporary or constant and chronic (such as migraines), they can all be treated by physical therapy for headache relief.

Physical therapy is not often the first thought that comes to mind when someone is suffering from a headache – most of the time, the common reaction is to take some form of pain-relieving medication. This may help to relieve pain in the short term, but if you are constantly suffering from headaches or migraines, pain relief drugs will not provide you with the same long-term effects that physical therapy will. If you've been dealing with pain caused by headaches, contact Sophie Sports and Recovery today in Vught, We will help you figure out what is causing your headache and provide an effective, safe, and natural treatment plan for eliminating them!

Tension headaches

The most common form of headaches is known as tension headaches. These can occur due to repetitive motions or poor posture in the neck/head. Tension headaches are caused by a strain on the "dura mater," which is a sensitive membrane that envelops the brain. The dura mater lies in close proximity to small muscles at the base of the skull that go into spasm when the dura mater becomes strained, thus sending pain signals to the brain and causing your headache.

Musculoskeletal headaches

Musculoskeletal headaches occur when there are significant amounts of tension in the neck. This is typically a result of physical imbalances, weaknesses, or damage, although emotional tension (such as stress) can also be a contributing factor. A traumatic injury to the neck, such as whiplash, is a common cause of musculoskeletal headache. With common neck injuries such as whiplash, the muscles and connective tissues in the neck can become torn or strained. This can lead to agonizing pain felt in the head, as well as in the face, shoulders, or neck.

Cervicogenic headaches

Cervicogenic headaches are also related to neck pain, involving the top three vertebrae of the neck. These headaches can develop as a result of certain conditions, such as a concussion or arthritis, but work-related strain can also trigger a cervicogenic headache. Professions that require a down-turned motion of the head or neck are the most prone for developing cervicogenic headaches. This may include hairdressers, long-haul drivers, chefs, nail artists, jewelers, etc.
